Secret Santas, or “Layaway Angels,” walked into the Toys “R” Us in Woburn on Dec. 4 and spent $1,200 to pay off layaways for eight unsuspecting customers, according to Bjorn Trowery, spokesman for Toys “R” Us.
On Wednesday, a different layaway angel walked up to the layaway counter in the Toys “R” Us store in Bellingham, Mass. The anonymous donor spent more than $20,000 to pay-off account balances for more than 150 unsuspecting toy customers, Trowery said.

“Layaway angels,” Trowery said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Because of the nature of the anonymous transactions, Trowery was unable to provide specific information on the donors, their motivations, or information on the recipients.

In both circumstances, the donors walked up to the layaway counter and stated their intentions to surprise people by paying off the account balances.
“Clearly their intentions were for the right reasons,” Trowery said. ”To spread a little holiday cheer.”
Trowery said he heard one of the recipients turned around and spent the money she intended to use to pay off her account to buy toys to donate to “Toys For Tots.”
“It’s amazing,” Trowery said, the woman paying it forward.
