Mayor Thomas Menino to Receive "Icon Award" From Gay Rights Group

MassEquality, a non-profit that works for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered people, plans to honor Boston Mayor Thomas Menino with an "Icon Award" on Wednesday.

Mayor Thomas Menino will be lauded on Wednesday for what activists say is his work making Boston friendlier to people of all sexual orientations.

"Mayor Menino is the most pro-LGBT mayor in the country," MassEquality Executive Director Kara Suffredini told the Boston Globe.

MassEquality works for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons.

Menino will receive an "Icon Award" at the group's fundraiser on Wednesday. Other honorees are:

The honors will be given Wednesday at the group's Icon Awards, which will take place at 6 p.m. at the State Room, 60 State St. in Boston. Information about tickets is available in the attached PDF.

Menino, who has had a slew of health problems in recent years, broke his toe and is using a walking boot, according to the Boston Herald.
