Robert Johnson, an African American studies professor at UMass Boston, feels like he was the victim of racial profiling, after a Jamaica Plain liquor store wrongly accused him of stealing 20 bottles of cognac.

Three weeks back, the 66-year-old entered Blanchards on Centre Street to simple buy a bottle of Hennessey for his own personal enjoyment. He left the store as the suspect of a theft investigation.

After re-watching security camera footage, employees at the store labeled Johnson as the man responsible for stealing from them back in March. They immediately informed police.

The very next day, Johnson had an officer at his door. The officer flashed a picture taken from the store’s surveillance cam and insisted it was of Johnson. Johnson pleaded his innocence.

“They targeted me because I was a black male,” Johnson told WBZ News.

Blanchards did apologize for the mishap, telling The Bay State Banner it was not a case of racial profiling.

Johnson says he is “hurt” and “humiliated” by the whole ordeal. He’s since filed a complaint with the city licensing board. According to WBZ News, Johnson is also considering a civil right lawsuit.
