“Murder at Breakheart Hill Farm” will be the subject of the Tuesday evening, April 21 meeting of the Lynnfield Historical Society held at 7 pm at the Centre Congregational Church. Local historians Alison Simcox and Douglas Heath will be the guest speakers.On a stormy October night in 1900, George Bailey, caretaker of the Breakheart Hill Farm in Saugus, disappeared. Farmhand John Best, with a history of violence and heavy drinking, was immediately suspected. The crime triggered one of the Boston area’s most sensational murder mysteries. For weeks, the Boston papers reported “bombshell” evidence with graphic images. Thousands flooded the streets around the Salem Superior Courthouse during the ensuing trial. Using official records and newspaper archives, the speakers uncovered the facts and bizarre circumstances of this shocking tale.Alison Simcox and Douglas Heath, both retired Environment Scientists, have written several books in addition to the Breakheart Hill Farm whodunit. Other subjects include Lake Quannapowitt, Breakheart Reservation, and the Middlesex Fells. Signed copies of their books will be available for sale after the presentation.Parking is available behind the Centre Congregational Church off Main Street. Refreshments will be served. North Shore audiences pack the house for Miranda Russell and her extraordinary 6 piece band. A powerful and moving vocalist, Miranda's performance centers on nuanced treatments of an eclectic range of favorites from Cole Porter to Richard Thompson. Critics have routinely praised her dynamic interpretation and delivery of the American Songbook as well as her mastery of contemporary songwriters like Paul Simon and Gillian Welch.

Miranda is considered by critics, audiences, and her fellow musicians to be a moving vocalist and nuance performer, and her concerts center on interpretations of the great songwriters of our day. Her versatility with the works of such luminaries as Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Richard Thompson have become the hallmark of her performances, as well as her haunting rendition of Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose.

Miranda studied theater at Emerson College in Boston and classical voice performance at Loyola University New Orleans' College of Music. She has performed in various European countries, and closer to home has enjoyed performing in many seasons at Gloucester Stage Company as well as several theaters in the New England area. She enjoyed five successive years of sold-out two-night stints at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, and played to a packed house for several years here at the Larcom Theatre. &nbsp;
Miranda has recorded three albums, including the award-winning lullaby collection All the Pretty Little Horses, and the live double CD Embrace: Live in Rockport, and most recently a compilation of live cuts of audience favorites. She and her husband have two adult children and live in nearby Ipswich, MA where they own and operate Russell Orchards, a 120-acre fruit farm with bakery, winery, and busy retail store.&nbsp;

The 18th annual Salem Arts Festival returns June 5-7, 2026, as a special "Salem 400+" edition celebrating four centuries of Salem's creative heritage. This free, family-friendly event transforms historic downtown Salem into an immersive artistic experience, attracting over 10,000 visitors annually.
What to Expect
Explore a juried visual arts gallery at Old Town Hall featuring 60+ works by regional artists competing for Best in Show and the John Boris Memorial Award. Browse a curated artisan marketplace across downtown Salem on Saturday and Sunday, with local makers offering ceramics, jewelry, textiles, woodworking, prints, and more.
Experience live performances across multiple outdoor stages throughout the weekend, including music spanning folk to hip hop, dance from flamenco to contemporary, circus arts, poetry, and more. Watch 12 talented muralists transform blank canvases into vibrant 8'×4' artworks during the Mural Slam at Artists' Row, then vote for your favorite via QR code to determine the People's Choice winner.

Essex Street and Front Street close to vehicles Saturday and Sunday (8 AM-7 PM), creating pedestrian-friendly festival zones.
Free admission to all events and activities. Bathrooms are available at Artists' Row, the NPS Visitor Center, and Destination Salem. Rain contingency plans ensure performances continue regardless of the weather.
