“Larchmont Remembered” will be the subject at the Lynnfield Historical Society’s 7 PM meeting on Tuesday, October 20 in the Lynnfield Centre Congregational Church. Rhode Island native and local historian Daniel F. Harrington will be the guest speaker.
On a wintery night in 1907, the wooden SS Larchmont set sail from Providence, bound for New York when it collided with a three-masted schooner off Block Island. Between 140 and 160 passengers, a staggering number, were lost or froze to death in the disaster. Some thought the Larchmont was “cursed” since it had suffered accidents and mishaps in the past when sailing under another name. Among the heroes of the tale were a group of Salvation Army cadets from Lynn, Massachusetts.
Harrington observed, “The story of the Larchmont makes the Titanic seem like a Disney movie, unmatched in violence and heroism.”
Parking is available behind the Centre Congregational Church off Main Street. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
