“This time of year, people tend to fall victim to the trap of weeks of denial followed by attempting a last-minute quick fix, which never works,” said Dina Whalen Owner of Fitness Together Lynnfield. “Instead, taking a realistic approach to your fitness routine is a surefire way to get the results you are looking for and maximize the time you spend working towards your goals.”
Whalen offers the following advice to maximize your workout and achieve noticeable results in time for summer:
- Make a small change and stick to it—Whether it is cutting one food item out of your diet or taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, mastering a small change and adding others will help you reach your goals quicker.
- Find a friend—Exercising with a friend can be more fun than exercising alone and you can mutually motivate each other to stick with an exercise program.
- Utilize HIIT—Instead of completing steady exercise that you can maintain for a long duration, try HIIT or high intensity interval training. HIIT is a great way to scorch calories and tone up quickly, but it’s not intended for beginners and can bring an increased risk of orthopedic injuries and cardiovascular complications
- Work out with weights—Strength training is an intricate part of a well-rounded fitness routine. Adding weight lifting to your program can help reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently.
- Be realistic—Instead of striving to lose the last 10 pounds before summer, set realistic goals like reducing your body fat by 1 percent per week.
“By making small changes and following these simple fitness tips, you’ll be confident and bikini-ready for the summer months ahead,” added Whalen.
