Lynnfield Elementary School Children Become Published Illustrators
Book Signing February 21st at Pottery Barn Kids Lynnfield
When Sharon Marrama, a Lynnfield resident, was considering an illustrator for a book she was writing her friend Lisa Garlitz, owner of Solstice Power Yoga at Market Street, told Sharon that she had just the right person for her to meet and guide her through the publishing process. Lisa introduced Sharon to Sally Lee, a renowned children’s book author and illustrator of more than 35 books, and the story began…
The meeting was set with the intention for them to chat about self-publishing, but when Sharon mentioned to Sally that she taught kids yoga Sally wanted to hear more. Sharon began to tell Sally how at the start of her yoga sessions she gifts each child with a clay pot that she uses to teach the kids to think about how plants grow and what they need to be healthy. She then explains to the kids that we, as humans, also need certain things to grow such as peace, love, kindness, courage, compassion, gratitude, honesty, patience, etc. Sally loved the story and said “We are writing a book about that lesson and we will incorporate the yoga kid’s art into the story!” Sharon of course accepted! They gathered the children together for an inspirational drawing party and were amazed at the beauty of the art that came from their self-expression. They were asked only to draw something in their pot that made them feel happy, and the result was raw and real and beautiful.
Sharon and Sally have decided to teach the kids another valuable lesson, one of giving back, so for each book sold a donation will be made to a local kid’s organization or charity. The first recipient of this gift will be to be Summer Street School PTO (equal to 50% of the net proceeds for books sold through the end of February) where the children all attend school.
Join us all on Sunday February 21 for the “Official Book Signing” at Pottery Barn Kids at Market Street in Lynnfield from 12:00-2:00. There will be a book reading, a yoga demonstration, and a book related art activity will be offered by Kidcasso Art Studio of Wakefield. Water and cupcakes will be served. In addition, the first 50 book sales will receive a special thank you gift!
