Lynnfield Gas Main Break Forces Evacuations Near Peabody Line

Those notified to evacuate were urged not to start vehicles and instead to walk to Main Street at Lowell Street.

LYNNFIELD, MA — Some Lynnfield residents near the Peabody line were ordered to evacuate on Tuesday morning because of a gas main that was hit on Lowell Street.

Officials said National Grid and Public Safety officials were on scene and are mitigating the situation.

The evacuation area was Lowell Street from Smith Farm Trail to the Peabody line, including Lil's Way and Valis Way, according to officials.

Emergency responders went door to door notifying residents of the evacuation order.

"If you have not been contacted personally by police and fire you can stay in your home at this time," officials said late Tuesday morning. "If you are in the evacuation area, please do not start your vehicle, and make your way to Main Street at Lowell Street by foot."

A shelter site was set up at the Lynnfield Senior Center for all affected residents.
