Lynnfield to play football in Division 5 next fall
Pioneers lose appeal to drop down a division.
While New England fans celebrate another Super Bowl title, there was football news a little closer to home. Lynnfield High School was denied its appeal to drop down a division and will instead play in Division 5 next fall.
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association finalized the division alignments for football for 2017 thru 2020-12. A number of schools appealed their placement before the Football Committee Jan. 31, including Lynnfield. But the committee denied the Pioneers' appeal.
Lynnfield has played in six different divisions since 2000. The Pioneers played in Division 4 from 2000 to 03. In 2004 they moved to Division 2A before moving to Division 3A in 2006. In 2013 they moved again, this time to Division 4 North. And last fall Lynnfield played in Division 3A North. Now it's onto Division 5 where they'll be joined by Somerville, Bedford, Newburyport, Weston, Watertown, Triton, Swampscott, Pentucket, Amesbury, and Saugus.
