Middle Schoolers' Band Competes in Boston

Local rock band includes four Lynnfielders and one Wakefield resident, all aged 13.

The band Frozen Fire, consisting of four Lynnfielders and one Wakefield resident, won an audience choice award at a recent battle of the bands in Cambridge - despite being considerably younger than their competition.

The band members are 13 years old, and parent Tom Maglio reported in this previous article on Lynnfield Patch that they are students of well-known local musician Kook Lawry.

The band consists of Wakefield resident Max South on lead vocals with Andrew Maglio on Keyboards and Vocals, Nathan Frates on Drums, Johannes Elliot on Guitar and Owen Foley on Bass – all from Lynnfield.

To make it to the battle of the bands at the Middle East in Cambridge, the musicians had to compete against six other bands in an online voting contest. They play covers by bands such as Blink 182 and Green Day, as well as their own originals.

"Their set consisted of two original songs; Road to Fame and You Lift Me Up and two covers: The Black Keys Smoke On the Ceiling, and FF's trademark cover from the movie School of Rock, called Teacher's Pet," reported Maglio, adding that the band's experience at the event was not unlike the movie, where a group of young students ended up in a competition against older musicians.

Frozen fire also reportedly missed winning the whole thing by a narrow margin to a band called Calando.

"It was an absolute blast and a bit surreal to see them take the stage at such a well known music venue where the likes of Aerosmith, J Geils, and other famous bands have played," said Maglio.
