Report: EEE-Infected Mosquitoes Found In Lynnfield

Town sprayed for mosquitoes late last week in response to EEE-positive specimen found in nearby Reading.

Mosquitoes infected with eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) have been detected in Lynnfield, according to a Monday Boston Globe report.

The Globe article noted that along with the EEE-positive mosquito sample that turned up in Reading earlier this month, insects infected with the virus have also been detected in Hamilton and Haverhill. However, those two previous towns apparently had EEE turn up in mosquitoes more likely to bite birds instead of humans.

State officials also announced earlier this month that a man in his 60s from the Merrimack Valley had contracted West Nile Virus, which has reportedly been detected in at least 48 Massachusetts communities in 2012.

This news comes only a few days after Lynnfield sprayed for mosquitoes along Main Street up to Route 128, which is part of its border area with Reading.

In Wakefield, the board of health announced last week that sample results expected this week will determine whether the town sprays again this summer.
