Town Votes On Prop. 2 Override Today

Balloting is now underway in a special town election that could alter the face of local services and the school system for years to come.
Lynnfield residents from all four precincts have until 8 p.m. Monday night to cast ballots in the special election, which seeks a $560,000 Proposition 2 1/2 override to resolve the town's budget deficit.
Supporters of the override have pointed out that the cost amounts to around $95 per household to preserve the high quality of the town's education while also maintaining current levels of service from town departments .

Last month, the Lynnfield School District to 46 employees, many of them teachers. That, however, was in order to comply with a contractual requirement for teachers to know their status for the coming year by May 15.

Tonight's vote was scheduled at the end of earlier this spring, where voters rejected a "pay as you throw" trash proposal that was aimed at raising several hundred thousand dollars in revenues.
Throughout the spring, town officials have also been negotiating with union representatives on aimed at saving another $750,000.
Selectmen are expected to meet with union representatives at in the selectmen's room at town hall for the public signing of a memorandum of agreement, potentially capping what has by all accounts been a long and difficult process.
