What was the point of voting

What gives... the town people meet for over 4 hours and vote on several subjects related to the town, but none as important as the proposed signage to be put up promoting the new Market Street.  With an overwhelming vote of "no" to the proposal, the Selectman of Lynnfield later decide to overturn the peoples vote and allow the signage to be put up.  Unfortunately, I was not one of the 500 or 600 people that attended the town meeting, however I did know many that did.  If I'm this upset about this decision I can only imagine how those who sat through the entire meeting feels... so much for having a say and a voice in this town!!!
