Malden Animal Control Officer Retires After 27 Years

The department celebrated his career on Tuesday.

MALDEN, MA — Animal Control Officer Kevin Alkins has retired after 27 years of service to the city, the police department announced.

Alkins became Malden's first full-time Animal Control Officer in 1999 and spent nearly three decades responding to calls involving lost pets, injured wildlife, stray animals and other animal-related incidents throughout the community. The position was later incorporated into the Malden Police Department, where Alkins became a familiar resource for residents, police officers, city employees and neighboring communities.

Throughout his career, Alkins handled a wide range of animal welfare and public safety calls while enforcing state animal laws and local ordinances. The department said he was known for approaching each situation with compassion, professionalism and patience, earning the trust of both colleagues and residents.

In addition to his work with the city, Alkins volunteered with the Aleppo Shriners, the Wilmington-based chapter of Shriners International that supports Shriners Children's hospitals and raises money for pediatric specialty care. He also served as Malden's Inspector of Animals and was reappointed to the role by Mayor Gary Christenson last year.

The department said Alkins' impact extended beyond responding to calls, describing him as a trusted colleague whose knowledge and experience made him someone others could rely on for assistance and guidance.

"On behalf of the City of Malden, the Malden Police Department, your fellow employees, and the countless furry, feathered, and wild friends whose lives you've touched over the past 27 years, thank you for your dedication, your friendship and for being a true advocate for animals and our community," the department said in a statement. "We wish you nothing but happiness, good health and many new adventures in this well-earned next chapter. Congratulations on your retirement. You've certainly earned it."
