MALDEN, MA — Four Malden juveniles are among five youths facing criminal charges following several fights that broke out during Everett's Independence Day celebration at Glendale Park earlier this month, city officials announced this week.
According to Everett Mayor Robert Van Campen and Police Chief Paul Strong, only one of the five juveniles charged is an Everett resident. The four Malden juveniles have been issued summonses to appear in Malden District Court for an August dangerousness hearing. The juveniles are expected to face charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot), assault and battery causing bodily injury, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.
Police said officers assigned throughout the event responded after several altercations involving groups of juveniles broke out in and around Glendale Park at approximately 8:40 p.m. Officers intervened and requested mutual aid from neighboring departments. At least 25 officers from Revere, Chelsea, Somerville, Medford, and the Massachusetts State Police responded to assist. Officials said no officers or spectators were injured.
Earlier in the evening, shortly after 8 p.m., officers responded to a report of juveniles causing property damage at Walgreens, where one juvenile was arrested. Police said the juvenile matched the description from a "be on the lookout" alert issued earlier by Revere Police regarding a report of a youth with a firearm. No firearm was recovered, and officials said no juveniles involved in the evening's incidents were found to be in possession of a firearm or displayed or discharged one during the celebration.
Approximately 2,700 people attended the event. Everett Police assigned 35 officers to the event as part of an enhanced security plan based on prior years' attendance. The city's fireworks display began at 9 p.m., about 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled because of forecasted thunderstorms. Officials said the change was weather-related and not connected to the disturbances.
Detectives, school resource officers and members of the department's Community Services Unit identified those believed to be involved by the following Monday while working with neighboring law enforcement agencies. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials said additional charges may be sought in consultation with the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
"We understand that incidents like this are unsettling for residents and families," Van Campen and Strong said in a joint statement. "We remain committed to providing safe, family-friendly community events through proactive planning and a strong public safety presence."
