MALDEN, MA — An independent bookshop is bringing used books and community events to Malden as its owners work toward opening a permanent location.
Nebula Books holds monthly pop-ups at Café Reynard inside Idle Hands Craft Ales at 89 Commercial St. The business specializes in science fiction, fantasy, and horror books.
Owners Jessica Sanford and Isaac Smolund launched the business in March. Mayor Gary Christenson recently welcomed the shop.
The pair of owners missed the experience of living near a neighborhood bookstore where people could gather for community events and meetups. They hope to use the pop-up model to eventually open a brick-and-mortar location that would provide another community space for the Malden area.
The business takes its name from the interstellar clouds where stars are born, reflecting its focus on books that explore other worlds. Plans include book clubs, outdoor reading events, and collaborations with other local businesses.
Nebula participated in an April book fair and open mic at Café Reynard alongside Read My Lips Boston and Book Wonder. The shop also advertised an October event featuring ghost stories, horror excerpts, poetry, and book sales.
The shop holds its regular Café Reynard pop-ups from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month. More information is available on its website.
