MALDEN, MA — A self-driving vehicle company has leased an industrial building near Malden Center as it works toward bringing its ride-hailing service to Massachusetts, according to a real estate report.
Waymo leased the entire 65,000-square-foot building at 180 Charles St., according to Hunneman's October Boston Industrial Report. The report was published on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
The property sits on 3.8 acres about two blocks from Malden Center Station. According to Quaker Lane Capital, the building has 64,300 square feet of space, with additional mezzanine space bringing the total to 76,300 square feet. The company's property page outlines improvements including dock upgrades, new paving, landscaping, and increased electrical capacity.
Argosy Real Estate Partners acquired the property in partnership with Quaker Lane Capital in November 2022. According to its acquisition announcement, the building was fully leased to an existing tenant scheduled to leave in 2023. The companies planned to address deferred maintenance and lease the property at market rates.
Waymo announced in February that it was returning to Boston after an initial visit the previous year, continuing efforts to adapt its technology to the area's streets and winter weather. The company said the work would help lay the groundwork for offering service in the Boston area.
According to the company's announcement, Massachusetts would need to legalize fully autonomous vehicles before Waymo could offer driverless rides in the state. Hunneman's report did not specify how the company would use the Malden property or when operations there would begin.
