2 Killed In Plane Crash At Mansfield Municipal Airport

Authorities said the two victims were a pilot instructor from Waltham and a student from Dover.

MANSFIELD, MA — A flying instructor and student died after a small plane they were aboard crashed and caught fire at the Mansfield Municipal Airport early Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Authorities identified the victims as Sydney Miti, 31, of Waltham, and Julian Lattermann, 18, of Dover.

The plane, which the Federal Aviation Administration said was a Cessna 172 aircraft, took off from Norwood Memorial Airport. It was owned by Horizon Aviation of Norwood, WBZ reported. The Cessna 172 can seat four people.

"The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident," the FAA said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

Mansfield Municipal Airport is a small public airport about a mile away from the Xfinity center. The airport occasionally hosts flight training. According to the FAA website the airport does not have an air traffic control tower.

There are two non-fatal incidents on record in the NTSB database. In 2004 a small place struck a construction vehicle when a 40-year-old pilot taxied too close to a closed runway. In 2011 a 65-year-old pilot was practicing with an amateur-built plane when a landing took him off the runway.
