Discovering the Songbird

Discovery is sometimes bittersweet.

For someone who loves music as much as I do, I am embarrassed to admit my most recent discovery.  I have to ask myself—have I finally become my mother?  There was a time when I knew all the songs on the radio, the lyrics, the hottest bands, the names of the individual musicians, and the super-models they were sleeping with. No new release could get by me—I would spend hours in Tower Records going through stacks of albums and later CDs, never missing the opportunity to add to my vast collection.  And when my husband and I moved in together, our albums and CDs also joined in holy matrimony and formed what is now a rather large and impressive anthology.  Not unlike my mother, who was once a great collector of jazz—somewhere along the way I lost interest in knowing who the new bands are and I found myself thinking, today’s music just isn’t as good as it used to be. I started listening more to classical, ancient, and Celtic music—all the while losing interest in the new artists of today.  If this sounds familiar, you must be over 45.

I guess this is just one more sign that I am getting older— not that that’s such a bad thing. I no longer need to know who’s who on the cover of Rolling Stone but I do still know a good voice when I hear one, and in my mind, I’ll always be hip.

So, this leads me back to the beginning, where I mentioned being embarrassed—somewhere along the way, I managed to miss out on an incredibly beautiful voice that many of you may know. Clearly, I wasn’t paying attention when Eva Cassidy started to sing—and sadly, the voice of this songbird sings no more. If you’re like me and you haven’t been listening, do something good for yourself. Consult your favorite search engine and discover the voice of Eva Cassidy—and if you’re lucky, you’ll fall in love just as I did—and as a bonus, chills might run up and down your spine.
