First Step to Organizing: Let Go of Perfection

Do not let the feeling of organized perfection prohibit you from taking that first step to becoming organized. The important thing is to just take the first step to achieve your organizing goals.

It's that time of year again...time for fresh starts...time when many of us are thinking, "THIS is the year I get ORGANIZED!"

Let me start off by saying that as a professional organizer I truly believe …

“An organized lifestyle is NOT about perfection.  It’s about living a manageable life”!

Having said that I find that some misinformed people have a silly notion that …

  • My house should look like a Nate Berkus well designed and organized TV set
  • My closets are the epitome of order and perfection
  • My office “inbox” is forever empty eagerly waiting its recipients

WRONG…WRONG…WRONG!

While I do consider myself organized, I am by no means the poster child for extreme organization….and for this I will not apologize.  My goal after all is not to help people achieve perfection.  Rather, as a professional organizer and design professional, I desire to create working spaces for my clients that work well…a space where life and work can efficiently take place and peacefully co-exist.

…so just to illustrate my imperfections…here goes…

  • My car, while it does not have empty water bottles rolling around on the floor is not the priority of my day and it may even not be washed and shined when you see it in the parking lot!
  • I do try to keep an “organized” wallet but every so often it does get out of control with receipts and post-its at which time I am forced to say to curious passersby, “I have no idea whose messy wallet this is…I shall bring it to the police station immediately!”
  • I have a junk drawer…scratch that…I have a junk closet…scratch that…okay I admit it…I have an entire junk room! (But in all fairness it is unfinished and currently waits for its future room designation!)

Do not let the feeling of organized perfection prohibit you from taking that first step.  In my view there is no “organized perfection” anyway.  The important thing is to just take the first step to achieve your organizing goals.  And remember…

“An organized lifestyle is NOT about perfection.  It’s about living a manageable life”!
