"NO" is okay

Opportunities sometimes get us side tracked from whats really important

So, I come to you with slight disappointment in my heart, but proud of myself nonetheless. Why? Just the other day, I had an opportunity presented to me to become the head coach of a professional minor outdoor football team. For those of you who know me, you probably know what my reaction was. For those who don't, my reaction was, "Holy sh*t! I can't wait to do this!" After my initial high wore off, I had to sit back and really look at what my goals are.

So, I took out my notebook that holds some of my "going in deep" questions and an outline of some of my objectives for this year. I flipped through all the pages in the book, even the blank ones, to see if "Head Coach of a professional minor outdoor football team" was there. That page did not exist. So, I asked myself one question, "does this truly align with my objectives this year?" The answer was no. So, I respectfully declined.

I wanted to share this with you because we all have goals and objectives we want to achieve. I have recently told you that you must have a plan, to do your best to stick to that plan and you will get to where you want to be. Along the road to achieving success, you will have many opportunities and chances to do other things. Remember, you cannot jump at everything that comes your way because some of them may take you completely off track. Ask yourself, "will doing this help me get where I want to be or am I just doing it because it's another thing to do?" If the answer is "another thing," maybe you should pass it up. The key is to try to stay on track 80-90% of the time. We all have some things that we want to do, that may show up that we weren't thinking of. There is your 10-20% detour away from the plan.
