Candidates In Special State Senate Race Racking Up Endorsements

The primary election for the Bristol & Norfolk state Senate seat is scheduled for Sept. 19 with the primary to follow Oct. 17.

Local politicians are starting to back candidates in the race to succeed former state Senator James Timilty.

On the Democratic side, former Foxborough selectman and Bernie Sanders campaign State Director Paul Feeney told the Sun Chronicle that he has revived the endorsement of several unions and social justice groups, along with the support of former Foxborough selectmen Lynda Walsh, Paul Mortenson, and Jim Thrasher.

Most recently, Feeney was endorsed by the Foxborough Fire and Rescue Local 2252.

Ted Philis of Sharon said he has the endorsement of his former boss state Rep. Lou Kafka, D-Stoughton and is working on more.

On the Republican side, Michael Berry of Walpole has the backing of state Rep. Jay Barrows, R-Mansfield, state Rep. Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro, state Sen. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, and Foxborough selectman and former state Rep. Ginny Coppola.

Also running for the GOP nomination is Jacob Ventura, an aide to state Rep. Steven Howitt, R-Seekonk, and Walpole Chamber of Commerce President Harry Brousaides. Ventura has the endorsement of Howitt and Brousaides is working on an endorsement list.
