Presenter Janet Schmidt

Janet Schmidt has been active in promoting anti-bias education for years. She led Amnesty International USA’s Human Rights Education Steering Committee for 5 years.

In 2002-2003 Janet was a Research Fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. Her presentation will provide an overview of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s history and its work against hate groups and other extremists and for children at risk, immigrant rights, and LGBT rights. She’ll also talk about and share her experiences working at the Center’s Teaching Tolerance project, which “works through educators to nurture a new generation that is more accepting of difference and more engaged in social justice than those that preceded it.” (splcenter.org/what-we-do/teaching-tolerance).

There will be short video clips and a photo slide show of images from the Center, the Civil Rights Memorial across the street, and the Montgomery area.Join Janet in a Conversation at the Meetinghouse. Free. Open to Public. Friday January 2nd, 7 pm
