Mideast Update: Syria, Iraq and the islamist Threat

Stuart Sears is a translator for Arabic Language Associates, LLC and independent scholar of Middle East history. He has a Ph. D. in Islamic History from The University of Chicago and previously taught at The American University in Cairo. He has previously presented talks on the Middle East at the Unitarian Church of Sharon. We welcome him back.

Stuart Sears will discuss current developments in Syria and Iraq, in particular the rise of extremist Islamist groups in Syria and Iraq. His talk will address the harsh conditions that prevail in these countries, the marginalization of democratic opposition movements, and the growth of extremist movements after many years of social unrest. It will also discuss the internationalization of these conflicts and the stakes and interests that countries inside and outside the region have their outcome.
