Drunk Driver Killed Man in Mansfield Crash, Police Say

Nicholas Salvo ran a red light and slammed into an oncoming car Friday night, police said.

Mansfield police said a Norton man was drunk Friday nightΒ when he blew a red light and slammed into an oncoming car, killing the driver.

Nicholas Salvo, 23, was arrested Saturday morning. He was treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital. He was being held on $10,000 bail pending an arraignment Monday.

Police said the crash happened on Route 140 at the intersection of Norfolk Street just before midnight.

An off-duty Mansfield firefighter witnessed the crash and said Salvo was traveling at a "high rate of speed" southbound on Route 140 when he ran a red light and slammed into a vehicle driven by a 63-year-old Raynham man.

The Raynham man was transported toΒ Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Salvo was charged withΒ motor vehicle homicideΒ while drunk,Β reckless operation, speeding, failing to stop for a red light and a marked lanes violation.
