Homeless Man Arrested in Mansfield Indicted on Fraud Charges for Collecting Donations for Veterans

Gary L. Fincher, 52, is charged with allegedly collecting donations for a nonexistent charity for homeless veterans.

A homeless man arrested over the summer in Mansfield has been indicted in Fall River District Court.

Gary L. Fincher, 52, pleaded not guilty to an indictment on Monday charging him with larceny over $250 and intimidation of a witness for allegedly misleading a police investigating him according to the Sun Chronicle.

Fincher was ordered held in jail on $15,000 cash bail.

Fincher was arrested on Aug. 6 after he was seen outside the Mansfield Stop and Shop on Chauncy Street by an off-duty Foxborough police sergeant. Fincher was reportedly wearing a baseball hat with the word “veteran” on it and was at a table with American flags, pamphlets, and cards.

When Mansfield Police arrived on the scene, Fincher said he was collecting funds for “Help for Homeless Vets,” but no organization with that name is licensed in the state.

Shortly afterwards, his bank account at Bank of America with a balance of $11,275 was frozen.

Fincher is due back in court on Dec. 18.
