Homeless Man Charged in Downtown Mansfield Stabbing

A homeless man was taken into police custody Tuesday night after an alleged fight in the downtown area of Mansfield.
Shane Butler, 37, was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, threating to commit murder, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace, according to the Mansfield Police Department.
At around 10:15 p.m., police in Mansfield received a 911 call for a fight between two men on North Main Street. A second caller told police that he was stabbed in the eye with a knife.

Police found the injured party upon arriving at the scene. The victim was transferred to Sturdy Memorial Hospital by Mansfield fire.
After receiving victim and witness statements that identified the suspect, officers searched the downtown area, engaging in a foot chase near Mansfield Fabric Care on Thomas Street.

Butler allegedly fought with officers and attempted to resist arrest, but he was taken into custody and booked at the Mansfield Police Station.
Butler is scheduled to be arraigned in Attleboro District Court today.
