Mansfield Lawyer Disbarred, Steals $140,000 From Veteran: Report
Gillis was disbarred after misappropriating almost $140,000 of his brother-and-law's benefits with the Veterans Affairs Administration.
MANSFIELD, MA — A local attorney was disbarred after he was convicted of misappropriating almost $140,000 from his brother-in-law, a disabled veteran. Colin Gillis, of Mansfield, pleaded guilty to the charges in 2014, and his license to practice law had been suspended since 2016. He waived his hearing to have the license reinstated, the Sun Chronicle reported.
In the late 90s, Gillis was appointed his brother-and-law's administer to his benefits with the Veterans Affairs Administration. Prosecutors proved that on various dates between October 2008 and September 11, Gillis misappropriated his brother-and-law's benefits money to pay for his own family and personal expenses.
Gillis was sentenced to six months under house arrest and five years probation. He also had to pay $137,493 in restitution.
