The two teams battled it out, but Mansfield came out on top 3-1.

Mansfield High boys' varsity ice hockey team beat Nauset, 3-1 Wednesday.

Nauset started early, making Mansfield take the defensive during the first period.

“I thought our defensemen played really well,” Mansfield head coach Rick Anastos said.

During that time, Mansfield only took shots on the goal when they had a power play, but with Nauset’s aggressive strategy and three penalties, the Hornets had four and a half minutes to get their shots to the net.

“We have enough skill that we won the game,” Anastos said.

Mansfield first scored during the second period when Erik Foley scored his first of the night assisted by William Kelleher with six minutes to go in the period.

But as the Hornets began playing more aggressively, their penalties started to cost them.

“We played down to their level,” Anastos said. “We just didn’t play within our own system. We had way too many penalties.”

Nauset scored at the beginning of the second period on a power play, capitalizing on the five Mansfield penalties during the period.

But Foley struck back to break the tie with another straight shot in the net, assisted by defensemen Evan Kershaw.

Captain Jason Collins sealed the game at 3:16 with an unassisted goal during a power play.

Mansfield outshot Nauset severely, with 33 shots on the goal against 14. While Nauset kept up an aggressive strategy and focused on keeping Mansfield in their own zone, breakaways cost them the game.

Mansfield’s Christian DeBeauport  made a total of 16 saves during the game.
