Mansfield Train Station Parking Lot Wants to Double Capacity

A special permit public hearing for Mansfield Train Station LLC is scheduled for December.

MANSFIELD, MA — The new owners of a parking lot near the train station are hoping to double the capacity of their lot.

During Wednesday night's selectmen meeting, Town Manager Bill Ross informed the board that Mansfield Station LLC, located at 75 Chauncy St., will be in front of the Planning Board on Dec. 14 for a special permit hearing. The lot's owners are hoping to add 194 spaces.

A parking lot expansion would first require a special permit from the Planning Board, followed by a meeting with the Board of Selectmen to increase the number of cars allowed by their license. Ross said it has been the board's past practice to not expand non-residential parking in the area.

Ross told the board he was informed by Bill Clemmey, who also owns a lot near the train station, that he will seek to expand his lot if 75 Chauncy St. is allowed to increase capacity.

Extra parking in the area will likely be a controversial issue due to the traffic and congestion that is common around the train station during the evening commute.
