North Common Flag Pole to Come Down

Due to damage to the top ring, the selectmen voted to remove and replace the North Common flag pole.

With damage to parts of the North Common flag pole recently discovered, the Mansfield Selectmen voted this week to remove and replace the pole which is now unable to hang a flag.

“There’s no doubt we need to replace the existing pole,” Town Manager Bill Ross said.

Removing the pole will cost about $1,100 according to Ross and it will be replaced with a new 80 ft. pole.

Since the damage was recently discovered, the U.S. flag that is usually hung from the top of pole has remained off of the pole due to the broken ring that the flag usually hangs from at the top of the structure.

After being removed, a foundation will be installed for a new pole and then capped with temporary asphalt until a new pole arrives.

The costs of buying and installing the new pole are estimated to be between $10,000-$12,000. The costs are significantly lower than the $40,000 needed for the South Common renovation which featured a new flag pole, lights, concrete, and the Corey Shea memorial.

The new flag pole will be placed in an area of the North Common designated in the master plan.
