Police: Drunk Driver in Fatal Crash Had Rum, Pot in Car

Nicholas Salvo allegedly killed a 63-year-old David Munise in a crash Friday night.

A Norton manΒ who was allegedlyΒ was drunk Friday nightΒ when he blew a red light and slammed into an oncoming carβ€”killing the driverβ€”pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

Nicholas Salvo, 23, was arrested Saturday morning. The driver who diedΒ wasΒ David Munise, 63, of Raynham,Β the Sun Chronicle reported.

Authorities saidΒ they found a bottle ofΒ Bacardi rum and a bag of marijuanaΒ inside Salvo’s vehicle, according to the Chronicle.

Police said the crash happened on Route 140 at the intersection of Norfolk Street just before midnight.

An off-duty Mansfield firefighter witnessed the crash and said Salvo was traveling at a "high rate of speed" southbound on Route 140 when he ran a red light and slammed into Munise's vehicle.

Salvo was charged withΒ motor vehicle homicideΒ while drunk,Β reckless operation, speeding, failing to stop for a red light and a marked lanes violation.

Munise was driving to his job at the Shaw's atΒ Erin’s Centre shopping plaza at the time of the crash, according to the Sun Chronicle.
