Police Release Name of Victim Involved in Deadly Incident at Mansfield Fish and Game

Police received a report of a deceased individual Monday afternoon.

A death investigation is now underway in Mansfield after police received a report of an apparent gun shot victim.

According to the Mansfield Police, a 911 call was received at 2:55 p.m. on Sept. 8 from the Mansfield Fish and Game club reporting a gunshot victim. When police arrived at the club, they found a 65-year-old male subject deceased.

On Tuesday afternoon, police identified the victim as as Stephen Backstrom, 65, of Bicentennial Court in Mansfield.

Police said that Backstrom was handing a.30-30 Marlin hunting rifle during the incident.

On Facebook, police said that the local residents should not be worried and that this was an isolated incident.

Currently, the death is being investigated by the Mansfield Police Department Detective Division and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit.

A spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office told the Sun Chronicle that there was no suspicion of foul play and Mansfield Fish and Game vice president Tim Lincoln said the incident was “definitely an accident.”
