Pot Talk Expected At Mansfield Town Meeting

Residents at May's Annual Town Meeting will likely be asked to vote on recreational marijuana.

MANSFIELD, MA — Residents at May's Annual Town Meeting will likely be asked to vote on recreational marijuana.

An article from the planning board calls for the creation of a marijuana cultivation overlay district near Route 140 in the area of Forbes Boulevard and Plymouth Street, according to the Sun Chronicle. A second article would designate the same area for marijuana sales by a special permit from the board.

If approved at town meeting, the articles would move on to the voting booth as a referendum, according to Town Planner Shawn Burke.

Not everyone is excited about the idea of recreational marijuana being sold in town. Resident Allen Bryer said he has filed a petition article to ban all recreational marijuana businesses and operations from Mansfield. That would also need a vote on election day if approved at town meeting.

Any votes taken on recreational marijuana would not have an impact on medical marijuana, which is regulated by a different set of rules.
