Remembering Roald Dahl

Settle in with the kids and beat the bitter cold. An array of children's books, both new and old, are available at the Mansfield Public Library.

When I reminisce about the books that I loved as a child I always come back to one, James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. Dahl the great British writer, also authored such works as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and Fantastic Mr Fox. All of these extraordinary books are available at the they are certainly worth a read.

James and the Giant Peach had the power to put me in a different place I was taken with its delicious imagery; forgive the pun. I was touched by James Henry Trotter’s tragic story, the loss of his parents, and his ensuing loneliness. I was inspired by his bravery and courage during his journey to New York City, inside of a floating peach. Though the book is grim and ghastly at times, ultimately it is uplifting. This to me encapsulates a one that doesn’t speak down to children; a book fascinating enough that adults can appreciate and enjoy.

The following books have just hit the shelves; joining the already great works by Dahl at the library. Amongst them could be a book that captures yours or your child’s imagination just as Dahl once captured mine. Come and check one out.
