Suspect In Mansfield Bank Robbery Also Faces Attempted Murder Charge

Police say Alfred Craven assaulted a man with a 2x4 prior to allegedly robbing a bank in Mansfield.

MANSFIELD, MA — A man charged with robbing North Easton Savings Bank in Mansfield also faces charges for an alleged attempted murder.

Alfred A Craven Jr., 48, was arrested at Mohegan Sun Friday and charged with unarmed robbery, larceny over $250, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, and disturbing a school assembly, according to the Mansfield Police Department. In Vermont, he faces charges of aggravated assault and first degree attempted murder, according to the Vermont State Police.

The Vermont charges stem from a Sept. 4 incident where police responded to a report of a man with extensive facial injuries at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. At the scene, police learned the man was assaulted by Craven with a 2x4 while at a residence in Searsburg. The victim told police that Craven fled the scene to avoid police.

Police say the victim sustained extensive facial injuries to include a skull fracture, broken jaw, and multiple facial fractures.

Craven's whereabouts were unknown until last week when he was spotted allegedly robbing a bank in Mansfield. According to a police investigation, Craven allegedly stole a vehicle from a car wash on Route 44 in Taunton on Sept. 17 and made his way to North Easton Savings Bank in Mansfield, where he passed a note to the teller demanding cash before fleeing.

During the week, investigators received information that led them from Taunton to the casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Craven is currently in the custody of the US Marshals and will face federal probation violation charges before he is arraigned in Attleboro District Court, police said.

Craven also faces charges in Taunton District Court.
