Teen Charged With Assault At MHS, Another Threatened Class

Police and school officials responded to two incidents at the Mansfield schools over the past few days.

UPDATE, Jan. 24 - The original version of this story referred to an arrest at Qualters Middle School. According to Superintendent Teresa Murphy, three was no arrest at QMS. A student was taken into custody without incident at Mansfield High School at dismissal time on Jan. 17 as part of an investigation unrelated to the Mansfield Public Schools. QMS was listed as the location due to an address error in the police log.

MANSFIELD, MA — Police and school officials responded to two incidents at a Mansfield school over the past few days.

The first one took place at Mansfield High School on Jan. 17 at 1:46 p.m., according to the Mansfield Police Log. The suspect, a 16-year-old, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (scissors), three counts of assault and battery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Due to the suspect's age, no other information is available.

On Jan. 22, Mansfield High School Principal Mary Watkins confirmed in an email to parents that a student became agitated and made threatening statements to a class earlier in the day. Student Resource Officer Detective Kenneth Wright and school administrators quickly handled the situation and Watkins wrote that she met with the class to reassure them that the incident is being investigated.

"School safety is our highest priority and any threats made to our school community are taken seriously," Watkins wrote.
