Three Charged In Mansfield Best Buy Cell Phone Scheme

Police say two of the suspects attempted to purchase cell phones with fraudulent information and a third may have had stolen phones on him.

MANSFIELD, MA — Three Massachusetts residents face charges after allegedly attempting to use fraudulent information to obtain cell phones from a store in Mansfield.

Benny Fabian, 26, of Lawrence; Jeison Roasrio-Martinez, 25, of Lowell; and Elizabeth Sanchez-Martinez, 21, of Boston, were arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy. Roasrio-Martinez was additionally charged with attempting to commit a crime and identity fraud, according to the Mansfield Police Log.

At about 3:23 p.m., Mansfield Police received a report of two people attempting to activate phones using fraudulent information from an employee at the Mansfield Crossing Best Buy. When the two left, police were able to locate their vehicle and question the suspects. All three people in the vehicle were taken into custody after officers called one of the identity theft victims, who confirmed that he did not attempt to activate a phone at the store.

Following a search of the vehicle, police found a laptop, cell phones, phone parts, cell phone chargers, and $1,420 on Fabian, according to the Sun Chronicle. Fabian allegedly told police that he was a cell phone repairman and the parts and phones belonged to his clients. Police are investigating whether the phones were stolen.

Fabian and Sanchez-Martinez were initially held on $40 bail and were released on personal recognizance following their arraignment in Attleboro District Court. Rosario-Martinez was initially held on $10,000 bail but was ordered held without bail at his arraignment on an Immigration Customs Enforcement warrant.

All three pleaded not guilty to the charges.
