Three Charged With Shooting Vehicle in Canton Arrested in Mansfield

Three men charged with assault with intent to murder in Canton were arrested in Mansfield Sunday morning.

Police are crediting a regional approach and a quick resolution for the arrest of three men in Mansfield accused of shooting a car in Canton.

Yancy Williams, 27, of Boston, Louis Whitehead, 35, of Boston, and Arthur Williams, 37, of Randolph, were arrested and charged with armed assault with the intent to murder and multiple firearm charges early Sunday morning after allegedly shooting at a vehicle on Route 138.

All three men are currently being held on $100,000 bail and are scheduled for an arraignment hearing in Stoughton District Court on Monday.

At 4 a.m. Sunday morning, police received a 911 call from a vehicle near the off ramp for exit 2A on Route 93. According to Canton Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz, the suspects drove up to the victims’ vehicle and proceeded to shoot five confirmed shots at the driver’s side front and rear doors. Currently, there is no known connection between the two parties and the shooting seems random.

The victims were not hit by the bullets and there were no injuries according to police. Initially, the victims thought the shots were rocks or a B.B. gun, before realizing the car was hit with bullets later down the road.

Forensic evidence shows that more shots were fired, but the total number of shots is still under investigation.

As the victims followed the shooter’s car at a safe distance, the three men proceeded to travel through Canton, Sharon, Easton, and Mansfield at a high rate of speed. During this time, area police departments were notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle. The three men were apprehended without incident after Mansfield police located the car on Route 106 near the Mansfield train station.

Mansfield Police Chief Ronald Sellon said the incident ended as peacefully as possible with no altercations or foot chases.

This is not the first run-in with the law for the three men. Berkowitz said the men have an extensive criminal record that includes felonies and charges that run the gamut.

The incident remains under investigation.
