Train Station Parking Fines Get Big Hike

Out of town commuters will be paying much more than $25 if they park in a residential spot.

MANSFIELD, MA — Get ready to pay more if you're from out of town and park in a residential spot at the Mansfield train station.

Wednesday night, the selectmen voted 4-0 to increase the fine from $25 to $75. The vote comes following requests from town officials to address the issues around parking near the train station.

Selectman Jess Aptowitz, who has for some time called for harsher penalties, said he wanted to see the town boot and tow those who park in spots reserved for Mansfield residents.

"It’s $50 to park in Boston, $25 is nothing. You gotta put some teeth into this. Maybe if they come home at 6 p.m. with 10-degree weather and their car’s not there, they won’t do it again," he said.

The new fines went into effect immediately, with the department of public works expected to post signs notifying commuters of the new fines.
