A Mixed Bag At Cal Ripken Tournament Saturday
Marblehead teams from the 9- and 12-year-old divisions were both in action Saturday during the Cal Ripken All-Star Baseball Tournament.
The Marblehead 9-year-old team was able to gain a 2-1 victory in its opening game against Revere in the Cal Ripken All-Star Baseball Tournament being held in Warrandale.
Eli Cohen pitched the complete six-inning game, and Jake Miller knocked in both runs for the winners.
In the 12-year-old tournament, being held at Gatchell Park, the local team fell to Burlington 10-0 in a game shortened because of tournament rules.

Burlington got hold of Sam Cohen's pitching early, scoring two runs in the first, but Cohen regained his composure and held the opponents scoreless in the second.
In the third, Burlington's Brian Shields connected with Cohen's delivery, knocking in one run and eventually scoring on a sacrifice play, to widen Burlington's lead to 4-0.

Burlington once again doubled their lead over Marblehead, in the fourth inning, after lackluster fielding loaded the bases for Burlington's Dan Piolti. Piolti took advantage of the opportunity and cleared the bases with a three-run triple. He was brought home on a Shane O'Halloran hit, making the score 8-0.
Marblehead looked as if they were going to get on the scoreboard in the fifth, as Danny Gienieczko took first on a walk and Pete Morrison advanced him to third with a single through the infield. The two runners would be stranded though, as Beau Dana's drive was caught.
The boys from Burlington ended the game in dramatic fashion, as Josh Boulos hit Jake Hammelburg's pitch out of the park, scoring two runs, and bringing the game to the tournament 10-run difference "mercy rule."
Because the tournament is double elimination, Marblehead drops to the lower bracket and could still play for the championship if they do not lose another game.
The 12-year-olds take the field Sunday at 10 a.m., when they will face the winner of the consolation game between Winchester and Concord-Carlisle.
The 9-year-old team plays Sunday at noon in Warrandale. They take on the winner of Saturday's Warrandale/Arlington American game.
