MARBLEHEAD, MA — A recent Marblehead High graduate who is about to start a dual-degree program in Fine Arts and Psychology at Tufts University was awarded this year's Marblehead Arts Association Liz Larrabee Art Scholarship.
This is an annual $1,000 towards college fees awarded to high school seniors from Marblehead who stand out in their artistic talent and commitment to the arts.
Nyberg credits the start of her love for oil painting to the Acorn Gallery in Marblehead. Ever since, she's been dedicated to her passion for art and developing her artistic talents.
MHS art teacher Shirley Huller White mentored Nyberg and encouraged "creative ideas that told a story, helping to express yourself and your thoughts."
"Art is such an amazing creative process, and channeling who I am as a person into a painting is an amazing experience to express my thoughts and ideas," Nyberg said. "I want to use my art to create meaning and change in the world."
Through her art, she said she hopes to "spread awareness about our connection to technology and how that's separating us from the natural world around us.
"I looked within myself and was struggling with these issues myself, being addicted to technology," she said. "We should be outside enjoying nature — and we live by the ocean."
The Liz Larrabee Art Scholarship was created by long-time supporters of the Marblehead Arts Association, Michele Martin, and her sister, Nancy, as a lasting memorial to their artist mother, with the aim of inspiring young people to continue their love of art and arts education to college and beyond.
The family considers it vital "to encourage young people to be able to express their feelings, whether it's about society as a whole or about themselves."
The Liz Larrabee family & Marblehead Arts Association said they are committed to rewarding creativity, commitment, and exceptional talent, and encouraging young artists like Nyberg to continue making a difference through their art for years to come.
