Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Marblehead taking road improvement seriously (marbleheadweeklynews.com) — Marblehead is rolling out a multi-year, $12.5 million overhaul of local roads, sidewalks, and utilities, with major safety upgrades coming to Pleasant Street and several neighborhood streets. Residents can expect more coordinated construction, better ADA access, and new tools like MarbleheadAlerts, an FAQ page, and future interactive maps to track projects and understand how work may affect their daily travel.
2. Light Board backs Green Communities bid, cuts winter rates (marbleheadweeklynews.com) — Marblehead's Municipal Light Board has approved joining the state Renewable Energy Trust Fund and will cut residential electric rates this December through February, saving a typical 1,000 kWh user about $67.50. The move opens the door to Green Communities grants, potential funding for building upgrades, and a future shift toward seasonal or time-of-use pricing, with a public rate hearing set for Oct. 14.
3. School Committee to discuss giving Eveleth School property to town (marbleheadcurrent.org) — Marblehead's School Committee is weighing a recommendation to turn the long-underused Eveleth School property over to the town, potentially opening it up for new municipal uses. With enrollment down and other school space available, officials say costly renovations or studies no longer make sense, and any transfer would still need Town Meeting approval, giving residents a direct say.
4. Torres honored at State House for business, community contributions (marbleheadweeklynews.com) — A Marblehead food entrepreneur, Maria Torres of Maria's Gourmet and Fine Foods and the Driftwood Restaurant, has been honored at the State House for her business success and community impact. Her Puerto Rican-inspired eateries, including a new Swampscott café, are celebrated for creating welcoming spaces, while she credits her extended "family" of employees for making the growth possible.
5. High school roundup/scores: Maddy Campbell sets up Barnstable volleyball win (bostonherald.com) — Marblehead athletes had a strong showing, with the volleyball team sweeping Peabody 3-0 and girls soccer blanking Danvers 3-0, plus wins in golf, cross country, and boys soccer. This statewide roundup also lists scores from dozens of other Massachusetts schools, giving Marblehead fans context for how their teams stack up across the region.
