Alexander Gassel is a Russian-born artist who came to the United States in 1980. He has been using an ancient technique: egg yolk tempera. He makes his own color pigments by grinding natural stones and minerals, such as malachite, cinnabar, or lapis into powder, which he then mixes with egg yolk. Based on traditional Russian artistic values, his new art works often employ a surrealistic combination of details from different civilizations. Old symbols are joined with contemporary subjects, reflecting more and more his new experience of life in America.

Susan j Schrader is a local visual artist who paints in an abstracted whimsical style that focuses on the figure and emotional connections. Susan’s paintings often reflect tall skinny imaginary people-creatures floating in space upside down amidst whimsical cityscapes made up of elongated skinny buildings and millions of tiny lines and dots interspersed on the canvas. She says “My paintings are about life and love and friendships. They are about relationships within yourself as well as with other people and moments in life. I communicate emotions through the simplicity of my quirky, little figures.”
