Athlete of the Week: Andrew Scholnick

This senior golf co-captain will have plenty of time to focus on his game now that his Boston Red Sox are done for the season.

18-year-old Andrew Scholnick can’t pull himself away from the game of golf. The senior is co-captain of the golf team, he caddies and works in the bag room at , and his favorite movie is Caddyshack.

Scholnick leads the Magicians this fall with fellow co-captain Pat Cormier, and has worked at Tedesco for more than eight years. Scholnick usually hits at the number one spot for Marblehead on match days.

“I really enjoy golf, it’s a lifelong sport, you can play it forever. I don’t think my body could handle football at age 50,” Scholnick said. “My dad (David) exposed my brother and I to the game and we both really got into it."

Andrew’s younger brother Matthew is also on the varsity golf team this fall.

“I spend a lot of time putting, you’ve got to be good on the greens to complete a solid round,” Scholnick said. “I work very hard on my short game, you can never practice enough."

Andrew’s best round so far was a 35 at Cedar Glen in Saugus, but on the links at age eight at Ferncroft, he sank a hole-in-one.

“My dad had to tell me it went in. I was too short to see the hole, I think he was more excited than I was,” Scholnick said. “I practice as much as a can, the minute the snow melts, I try to get out there to work on my game.”

Andrew lives with his family on Pickwick Road, and has lived in town his entire life.

Scholnick said he wants the team to be successful, but when he tees off he’s got his mind set on how he can win the hole and win the match to get points for Marblehead.

“It’s intense sometimes, you’re really focused on what your doing, you really have to block everything else out, hit it straight and sink your putts,” Scholnick said.

The team is currently 5-3 with a match at home against Beverly on Tuesday afternoon.

The team lost two tight matches against Danvers and a three-point loss to Beverly to go with two wins over Salem. The Magicians also knocked off Revere, Gloucester and Peabody, and have won four of their last five matches.

Scholnick started playing in tournaments at age 11, and has been focused on golf ever since.

“I absolutely want to golf in college,” Scholnick said. “I had a great season as a junior and I want to be better as a senior, golf is a game of perfection, not of failure.”

Andrew’s favorite classes at MHS are Government and History, and the senior is looking at Bentley, Bryant and George Washington University with an eye on business.
