Athlete of the Week: Cassandra Rogers

Lacrosse started out as something to do during the soccer off-season, but now it’s 16-year-old Cassandra Rogers’ favorite sport. Rogers, who lives on West Shore Drive with her family, just finished up her sophomore year at Marblehead High School.

The season ended too soon for Rogers and the rest of Coach Annie Pugh’s girls, the Ipswich Tigers knocked Marblehead out of the tournament with a 13-10 win in the Division 2 North Quarterfinals.

Rogers plays midfielder on the lacrosse team and goalie on the soccer team, she enjoys preventing goals more than scoring them.

“The running came easy for me when I first started playing lacrosse, I really had to learn to work the stick,” Rogers said. “People think that goalies don’t run too much, but we’ve got to be in good shape.”

Marblehead finished 15-5-1 on the season, knocking off Georgetown and Bishop Fenwick in the playoffs, before being eliminated by Ipswich.

“Workouts start right away for me, I’ll be working this summer as a bus girl at the Driftwood, and getting in shape for next season,” Rogers said.

“It was hard for the seniors to go out with a loss, but we’re determined to be back next year, we have a lot of good players coming back,” Rogers said.

Rogers will be attending lacrosse camp over the summer in addition to her own workouts, she was an NEC All-Star in soccer last fall, and the team swept the season series with Swampscott in 2010.

Cassandra’s dad Ken played football for Marblehead in the late 1970’s.
