Athlete of The Week: Tyler Gelineau

Marblehead's Tyler Gelineau and his hockey teammates had one goal in mind when they began fall workouts: win the hockey championship. Well, their hard work paid off with a title.

The plan was simple: focus on one thing, work incredibly hard at it, and wait for good things will happen. That’s exactly what came about for Tyler Gelineau and his hockey teammates at Marblehead High School.

The hockey team had ten seniors returning and several of them skipped fall sports to concentrate on getting ready for the Northeastern Conference hockey season. Marblehead hit a few bumps in the road, but at the end, Tyler and his teammates were standing with a state championship trophy at the Boston Garden.

“We had an intense workout program to get ready for the hockey season, we were focused, we knew we had a shot to go for a title and we were determined to be as prepared for the hockey season as we possibly could be.”

Gelineau played all of the forward positions on the hockey team for coach Bob Jackson, and tennis in the spring for coach Eisabeth Foukal, usually at second singles.

“It’s different mindset, for sure,” Gelineau said. “Going from a team sport, where everyone has to be clicking to win to being kind of selfish and singular to be successful on the tennis court.”

Gelineau will be heading to the University of Colorado in the fall, concentrating his studies on video, marketing and advertising.

“I’ll be working at the Corinthian this summer, wherever they need me,” Gelineau said. “I work everywhere over there, the canteen, bar back, wherever.”

"I'm proud to be from Marblehead and to be part of the athletic community here."

Favorite TV show: “I really don’t watch too much TV, I’m always busy doing something else, really.”

Favorite move: “I just saw “Fast Five”, and I liked that one a lot.”

Favorite artist/music: “I like EVERY type of music, seriously, I really love a wide variety of different types of music, there really isn't any music I don't like."

Most embarrassing song on my iPod:  “I’ve got some Taylor Swift on there that I like.”

Dream: “Winning the hockey title was great, we worked at it extremely hard, it was a great corps group of guys, it was great to set out to do something and do it.”

Up next: Heading off to the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he will wait a few semesters before deciding on a Major.

“I’m going to play tennis there and club hockey there too,” Gelineau said. “Our A. D. (athletic director Mark Tarmey) said that the club hockey program is very competitive out there, similar to top level high school programs, so I’m excited to keep playing at school, but I’ll wait until sophomore year to do that.”
