Athlete of the Week: Tyler Phillips

Marblehead High School's Tyler Phillips is always busy, whether she's swimming, diving, playing field hockey or lacrosse - just don't ask her to pick which one is her favorite sport.

junior Tyler Phillips is always getting ready for the next sports season, whether it be lacrosse, swimming or field hockey.

In addition to being named the Marblehead Patch Athlete of the Week this week, Tyler will turn 17 tomorrow on New Year’s Eve.

This year's field hockey team had some big moments, including head coach Linda Collins’ 200th win and a big 1-0 win over rival Danvers at , with Phillips scoring the only goal of the game.

Tyler is the two-time defending NEC diving champ, and swims the 200 Relay and the 50 Freestyle for the Magicians, who’ve beaten the Big Blue and Salem so far this season, and take on Revere on Jan. 3, at the .

Phillips has been on the varsity lacrosse team since her freshman year, playing two seasons with her older sister, Maika.

“My mom grew up in Nahant, she was a really, really good swimmer, she got me started swimming when I was really young at the Corinthian, (Yacht Club)” Tyler said. "Maika got me interested in field hockey and lacrosse because she played and so I wanted to play too.”

Phillips plays midfielder on the field hockey team and middie on the lacrosse team, last spring’s team won over 10 games and head coach Annie Pugh was named NEC Coach of the Year.

“There’s no way I can pick one sport over the other, I like them all, I love to play,” Phillips said.

“My parents have been a huge positive influence on me, my sister, all of my coaches I’ve had at Marblehead have been great, I’m really lucky to have had such great coaching in Marblehead,” Phillips said.

Phillips said her favorite class in school is art, and she enjoys painting, sculpting, drawing, just about anything artistic works for her.

“I would love to go to college and study art after high school, I’d like to play sports in college too, and someday work as a graphic designer for a magazine,” Tyler said. “I enjoy being creative in my down time from sports.”
