Character Breakdown:

BILLY ELLIOT: To play 10 to 13. Dance skills needed; however, acting is the priority. Billy stumbles upon a ballet class and develops a passion for dance. To him, dance is a way to feel whole and free himself from the problems of life. He finds himself stuck between appeasing family and chasing his newfound love. Range: E3 - C5 . Clear tone-but not a boy soprano. Please mark height on submission. There is flying involved. We will be casting an understudy as well.

DAD: To Play 35-45. Billy’s stoic father. A widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of a work strike, he is still deeply scarred by the death of his wife. Billy’s dancing initially sends him into a rage but he learns to support his son. Range: A2 - Eb4 Baritone-rough around the edges. No movement or dance required.

GRANDMA: To play 60+. Billy’s eccentric grandmother. She is forgetful and a little aloof. Despite her inattention, she harbors a bitter resentment towards her dead abusive husband but has found solace through dance. Range: F#3 - F#4. Alto- with good control of the vibrato. Not a dancer, but should be comfortable with some movement.

TONY: To play 18-25. Caucasian. Billy’s brother. A lazy but passionate miner. Hotheaded and scrappy with seemingly no regard of respect for his father, although he shares his disapproval of dance. Range: D3 - F4 – lyric Baritone/Tenor 2. No movement or dance required.

MRS. WILKINSON: 40-50’s. The local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy’s mentor. Hardened and mouthy, she actually has capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy. Believes in the power of personal expression through dance. Range: Gb3 - Bb5 Alto- strong mix/belt. Not a dancer, but should be comfortable with some movement.

DEBBIE WILKINSON: To play 9-12 years old. All sizes and shapes. The ballet teacher’s daughter. A bit stand-offish and argumentative, her childhood crush on Billy leads her to constantly discourage him. Should have basic ballet skills but acting is the priority.

MICHAEL: To play 10 to 13. Billy’s careless and fun-loving best friend. He lives in the realm of expressing oneself, going so far as to commonly dress in women’s clothing. Range: A#3 - B4 can have more of a character voice. Strong mover; acting the priority. Please mark height on submission.

BALLET GIRLS: To play ages 9 to 14. Open to all ethnicities. All sizes and shapes. Should have basic ballet skills/knowledge. We are looking for a wide range of skill levels.

ADULT BILLY: 20’s. Very strong, classically trained ballet dancer.

ENSEMBLE/CHORUS: Open to all ethnicities. Men and women of all shapes, sizes and vocal types; who have solid singing voices and personalities to play many ensemble roles that include: MINERS, POLICE OFFICERS; ROYAL BALLET SCHOOL MEMBERS.
