Boston Latin Ends Boys' Tennis Team's Season

For the second year in a row, the Wolfpack turn out the lights on the Marblehead High School boys' tennis team.

The 13th seeded Boston Latin Wolfpack came to Marblehead Friday afternoon with their 10-10 record, and three hours later their record was 11-10 and Marblehead High School's boys’ tennis team was all done for the season.

The Headers, seeded fourth in Div.4 North, lost 4-1 with Ryan Dempsey and Dylan White knocking off Latin’s Cameron LaBeck and Tom Jenkins to avoid the 5-0 shutout.

“Our record is deceiving,” Latin coach Herb Chenell said,” “We play a very tough schedule, (in the Dual County League) during the regular season, and it really helps us when we get to the tournament.”

Marblehead (14-4) fell into a hole early when Chris Wigglesworth (7-8) lost at first singles to Rhonny Rosario, 6-0, 6-4.

“Chris played well, he (Rosario) was very aggressive early, attacking the net and putting the pressure on Chris,” Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal said.

The Wolfpack increased their lead to 2-0 when Jordan Tolbert eliminated Tyler Gelineau (7-8) at second singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Boston Latin clinched the match at first doubles when David Deng and Erik Wolflink beat the Jackson twins, Peter and Sean, 7-6, 6-2. The twins finished up at 8-3 on the season in doubles play.

Sophomore Ian Hyte played the tightest match of the day at third singles, but fell in three games to Boston Latin’s Jason Chen, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.

Boston Latin knocked Marblehead out of the tournament last spring 3-2 in the playoffs.

“We don’t have a lot of history with them, just the meetings in the tournament,” coach Chenell said. “They played well, they competed, and it was some good tennis today.”

Boston Latin moves on to the Quarterfinals of the Div. 2 North playoffs, the Wolfpack will take on another high seed, number five Burlington Monday afternoon in Burlington.

“It’s not the way we wanted to end the season, but I’m very proud of my team,” coach Foukal said. Marblehead finishes with a .778 winning percentage on the season.

First doubles duo Dempsey and White finished the season with a record of 10-4.

Boston Latin joins Pentucket, St. John’s Prep and Hamilton-Wenham on the list of teams that beat the Headers on the court this season.

“We lose some very good seniors, but we have a lot of underclassmen that I have confidence in for the 2012 season,” Foukal said.
